Module 14 Waking and Sleeping Rhythems

To sleep; perchance to dream: ay there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
- Hamlet Act III Scene I

William Shakespeare
Finally, something we do everyday. There is no way of escaping this world of sleep and dreams. We spend nearly one third of our entire lives in this state of consciousness during which time we have dreams. Some of those dreams are wonderful and fantastic. Still others are tragic and unforgettable. Freud said that dreams were the window to the subconscious. In this module we will learn about sleep, and of course, dreams. Before we go on listen to a song by Roy Orbison on this very topic.

NOTES FOR MODULE:
StagesofSleep

Sleep apnea and teenagers: Usually this is a problem associated with older people that may be overweight, but here is an interesting story and video about the problem that may be affecting teens. http://www.sciencedaily.com/videos/2005/0801-tired_teens.htm
Let's face we all will face problems with sleep. For a start in your research about sleep. Look at the same website above and skim over some of the article titles. http://www.sciencedaily.com/news/health_medicine/sleep_disorders/
Choose one or two articles related to the same topic and prepare a short summary on power point or an application like it. Doing the same thing as you did in the sleeping cycles assignment.
Here's what must be done for this module. Good luck, and have a good night's sleep:

Notes for the module:
Module 16: Drugs and Consciousness
We live in a drug infused age. We seem to have a drug for everything. Some of those are legal drugs, and others are illegal. Some a seemingly benign while others are extremely dangerous. Consider watching the NFB series Through the Blue Lens which can be found on Youtube.

Notes for Module 16:
Circle discussion topic: View the entire film above (there are 6 segments, all are on Youtube). Bring your thoughts and fellings about the film, its topic, the people in it, etc. So long as you are prepared to enter into a dialogue about this you will be fine. The discussion is class based. You will be graded on several aspects related to discourse, i.e. speaking, listening, acknowledging, etc. This is not a debate. All opinions/feelings are welcomed. This should be viewed prior to your class (to be done on the class after your exam).
